Perfect weather, hot conditions and a record number of participants: nearly 1,300 runners at the Paznaun Ischgl Ultra Trail
Victories for favourites David Niegemann and Marie-Luise Mühlhuber over the flagship distance – 146 young runners at the PIUT Kids Run – 2,520 Euro raised at the Charity Run. Bright sunshine, midsummer temperatures and a new record for participants characterised the third edition of the Paznaun Ischgl Ultra Trail, or PIUT for short. Almost 1,300 runners took part in the various races over the event weekend. Across six distances ranging from ten to 100 kilometres, they experienced challenging trails, breathtaking views and the diverse landscape of the entire Paznaun region.
The race offered distances of 100, 85, 50, 30, 20 and 10 kilometres. The flagship event covered 100 kilometres and around 6,300 metres of elevation gain. Large sections of the routes followed the Paznaun High Route, linking the four villages of See, Kappl, Galtür and Ischgl.
The summer temperatures proved a real test for the participants, on top of the sporting challenge itself. Nevertheless, dry trails, excellent course conditions and the support of numerous volunteers ensured a successful trail running festival set against the backdrop of the Paznaun mountains.
Victories for the favourites over 100 kilometres
The German favourite David Niegemann came out on top over the gruelling 100-kilometre course. He crossed the finish line in 13:04 hours, securing victory in the men’s race. In the women’s race, Marie-Luise Mühlhuber from Germany lived up to her status as favourite. With a time of 15:24 hours, she won the flagship race.
“For me, the PIUT 100 is one of the absolute highlights of the trail running calendar. I’ve run in many places – the combination of technically challenging singletrack, stunning views over the Paznaun valley and the fantastic support from the many volunteers makes the race in Ischgl one of my favourite events,” explained David Niegemann after his victory. The race had been extremely demanding, Niegemann continued: “That’s why I deliberately paced myself right from the start. This strategy paid off, because on this course, good energy management – especially for the final long climb – is key to success.”
A total of 78 athletes took on the challenge of the 100-kilometre race.
Hannah Marquard and David Wöhrer win the PIUT 85
The PIUT 85 also demanded endurance, technical skill and careful pacing from the 64 competitors in total. In the men’s race, David Wöhrer from Austria claimed victory after 11 hours 46 minutes. The women’s race was won by Hannah Marquard from Germany in a time of 13 hours 55 minutes.

In the 50-kilometre race, the victories went to Sven Koch in the men’s event and Sanna El Kott Helander in the women’s event. Lars Völter and Anna Strakova won the PIUT 30. Over 20 kilometres, Lukas Ehrle was victorious in the men’s race and Johanna Eppler in the women’s.

Four locations, one trail running event
The unique concept behind the Paznaun Ischgl Ultra Trail brings together all four villages in the valley in a single event. The routes pass through See, Kappl, Galtür and Ischgl, allowing participants to experience first-hand the scenic and sporting diversity of the Paznaun.
The Paznaun High Route, which is around 130 kilometres long, plays a key role in this. It usually attracts numerous long-distance walkers every year. Once a year, selected sections of the trail are transformed into the PIUT race routes.
The stages are just as varied as the region itself: they range from comparatively short and easy-to-run sections to long stretches that are particularly demanding both technically and in terms of stamina.
146 children at the PIUT Kids Run
The spotlight was already on the next generation of trail runners on Friday. 146 children took part in the PIUT Kids Run presented by Volksbank Tirol. The young runners completed their age-appropriate routes with great enthusiasm, ensuring a successful start to the weekend’s events.
2,520 Euro raised at the PIUT TEN Charity Run
The PIUT TEN Charity Run focused on sporting participation for a good cause. A total of 126 runners took part. Two Euros per person were donated for every kilometre completed. This raised a total of 2,520 Euros. The donation will go to the association supporting innocent people in need in the Paznaun valley.
Organisers give a positive assessment
“The Paznaun Ischgl Ultra Trail is a striking demonstration of just how diverse our region is. Nearly 1,300 athletes – a new record for participant numbers – made the third edition a truly special experience. Despite the hot temperatures, the weather and trail conditions were perfect. The routes through all four villages and along the Paznaun High Route combine a sporting challenge with our unique mountain landscape.”
The PIUT Kids Run on Friday was also a wonderful demonstration of the enthusiasm of the next generation. I would like to warmly congratulate all the winners and participants on their fantastic achievements and am already looking forward to the fourth edition,” said Alexander von der Thannen, President of the Paznaun–Ischgl Tourism Association.
Race director and co-organiser Lukas Kocher was also extremely pleased with how the third edition of the event went. The new record number of participants, the impressive performances across all distances and the tremendous dedication of the numerous volunteers had all contributed significantly to the event’s success. Special thanks are also due to all the emergency services, whose professional cooperation and valuable support ensured that the entire event ran safely and smoothly.
Following this successful race weekend, all eyes are already turning with great anticipation to the fourth edition in 2027. Once again, it will be a chance to pull together, experience top sporting performances and create unforgettable moments.
SAVE THE DATE: The 4th edition will take place from 9 to 10 July 2027.
